I always knew I would live the life I wanted again and now I have it

My name’s Samantha I’m 22 years old I completed the Lightning Process seminar in May 2009 with Helen James in Bury Manchester.

Before attending the seminar I had suffered from ME for two years which I consider to be the result of poor recovery from glandular fever when I was 17 years old. I was generally physically, mentally and emotionally unwell with nothing specific to point out. I was studying for end of year university exams at the time so put my experience down to stress. I felt exhausted and experienced panic attacks as my anxiety and depression grew. I knew at the time that what was happening was not normal for me as I would usually just breeze through taking things in my stride without many complaints of illnesses etc. when I returned home from university I carried on in this state and returned back to work when I symptoms persisted and became progressively worse. I was getting to the point of collapse whilst I was at work and was ready to burst into tears at any given moment. I eventually ended up having to take time off work ill which resulted to around six weeks bed rest where I was physically unable to get out of bed. I needed someone around all the time to help me with regular daily things. I had to resign from my job and cancel the plans that I had made for the summer, this was devastating. By the end of the period I spent in bed I was very depressed and felt numb.

I was determined to get back to university for my second year of study. I managed to get myself there but struggled, I felt weak and unable to cope. By this point I had had all the tests possible to rule out any possible causes of my symptoms, they all came back normal. One of the hardest things was the frustration of knowing that something was wrong but without knowing what it was I felt ill equipped to deal with it. I didn’t know anything about ME at the time but my family had an idea for a while before it was suggested to me by a friend at university. Once I had a loose diagnosis from my G.P I began to deal with the illness in whatever way I could with the support from family and friends.

During the year off I took from university I struggled with the fatigue and felt depressed by my situation and all the things I felt I was missing out on at 21 years old. Gradually over the year I picked up voluntary work and as time went on I became stronger and my confidence also started to grow. I transferred to a university closer to home at which point my symptoms were mild and although I found it difficult at first I eventually found my feet and managed to complete the year.

Although I no longer considered myself to have ME by the time I attended the Lightning process with Helen I still felt there were areas of my life that I where I wanted to make changes and there was always a niggle in the back of my mind. Since the lightning process I have achieved the final positive changes that I really wanted. I now have more confidence and faith in myself, and feel almost lighter as I worry less. I am no longer scared of becoming ill again. I am now able to get out and do all the things I want to do no matter how big or small and know that I can do them. My outlook on life is brighter and the Lightning Process has strengthened my confidence in knowing that I no longer have ME and now I can be Sam, maybe even bigger and stronger than I was before. I always knew I would live the life I wanted again and now I have it.
